Descriptive notes with every grade
Assessments mean more than grades.
The Gradefully gradebook allows you to add descriptive notes along with each grade.
- Teacher-only notes for your honest feedback
- Student-facing notes to promote learning
- Feeds automatic, personalized report card comments
How it works
When you enter a student grade, you take 4 seconds to also enter a short descriptive note about their strengths, areas of growth or anything else.
-
Teacher notes
You are the only one who sees the teacher notes.
-
Student notes
Student notes appear on their PDF progress reports.
Write them in the gradebook.
You can enter the descriptive notes directly in the notes popover in the gradebook view. Click a grade, and both notes are right there.
Or quickly in quick grade entry.
Pick the student, type the grade, add your notes and press Add. The note goes in with the mark.
Progress report
Share the student feedback on the progress report. Each student note prints right under the assignment it belongs to, ready for the student and their family.
How does it feed the report card comments?
Gradefully analyses the assignment descriptions, grades and descriptive notes to evaluate strengths and areas of growth. It then drafts a report card comment following customizable specifications and in your own voice.

What is a descriptive note?
A few words you write beside a grade about what you saw in the work: a strength, an area of growth or anything else worth remembering. Each grade can carry two notes, one for you and one for the student.
Who can see my teacher notes?
Only you. Teacher notes stay in your gradebook, never print on a progress report and stay hidden even when you share your gradebook with your principal or a colleague. Gradefully also reads them when it drafts your report card comments.
Where do student notes show up?
On the student's PDF progress report, right under the assignment they belong to. If you give your principal or a colleague read-only access to your gradebook, they see student notes too. Write them for the student to read.
Do I have to write a note for every grade?
No. Notes are optional. A few words on the assignments that matter most already give your report card comments real examples to draw from.
How do notes help with report card comments?
When you draft comments, Gradefully reads the assignment descriptions, the grades and your notes to suggest strengths and areas of growth for each student. You keep the ones that ring true, and it drafts the comment following your settings. You review and approve every comment.
Are my notes sent to the AI?
Yes, when you draft report card comments, so they can shape the draft. Student names are replaced with codes before anything reaches the AI. Names you type into a note yourself, like a parent's or another student's, are not replaced, so leave those out. Details are on our privacy page.
Can I write notes while I enter grades quickly?
Yes. Quick grade entry has a teacher notes field and a student notes field beside the grade, so the note goes in with the mark.
Write the note while the work is fresh.
A few words with each grade now. Report card comments built on real examples later.
